What do we feed our Gypsies...
This is a very important part of our breeding program. I feed our broodmares proper nutrition, making sure they have more than enough to support themselves and the growing foal. I have tried a lot of feeds & supplements that are available to us in the Northwest. I have chosen to use Purina Enrich. I have great results with Enrich and we can get it just about anywhere. The constancy in the quality is spot on.
I also feed a supplement called Total Supplement Equine.
We grow our own Timothy blend hay along with local grass. We buy Central Oregon Alfalfa and Teff due to the high quaitly of the hay grown there.
We are proud to support Oakhurst Veterinary services located in Newberg for all of our equine needs. Oakhurst is one of the top vet clinics around. We use Ryan Ferris of Summit Equine for all of our reproductive needs, collection, and shipping.
All of our stock 2+ yrs old gets annual dental checkups/floats.
This is where the work begins if your prepared for the task. I have tried any product for horses that I hear people rave about, I have a shelf in my tack room with lots and lots of bottles of shampoos and conditioners. I always go back to one product and this is what you will find in my grooming tote and wash rack, Mane-Ly. I love how the products work and it is easy to order and quick shipping. If you run into me at shows, ask for a free sample.
Hydration, that is where getting white white starts. I gave up on bluing shampoos and now just use the Hydrate24 to combat the grim and keep manes, tails, and feather in the best condition I can.
Use code PARRETT when u checkout for a discount. This product also works wonders on our Mini Aussie. The hair polisher gets those nasty burs & knots out like a charm.

This is a serious condition and should not be toyed with. Though it can happen in any breed, it is more common in the draft breed. There is no rhyme or reason for the occurrence, but good hoof care and proper nutrients will help prevent this condition.
This is one heated debate in the Gypsy horse world.. Some fear this DNA marker like the plague, others who have done the research and talked with the qualified professionals realize that is is just that, a DNA marker. We use Etalon Diagnostics for all our color testing and this test is included in the report. We will not breed a single carrier to a carrier for the purpose of weaning our the marker in the Gypsy breed. There is no know fact that a single copy will affect a Gypsy. There is no solid proof out there. It is a serious problem in some breeds, but not in the Gypsies. I read up on it, follow the latest information and talk with educated people that have the qualification to back up their information. Like I say to anyone who ask's, I will take a single carrier with quality over a non carrier of below par breeding quality. Feeding a proper diet is essential regardless of PSSM status.
A great article by the European Brabant American Society
Our herd is negative for FIS. We do test all new stock coming into our program. Please follow the link provided below to learn more about FIS.
With the Gypsy horse, you get beauty, but under that beauty there can be hidden little buggers that will have you pulling your hair out.
The treatment protocol is not approved by vets. This is what we do to maintain the health of our herd. Every quarter we use Dectomax and lime sulfur dips. We put the sulfur dip in a pump sprayer and drench the lower leg, knee down. Once you mix the lime sulfur, you must use it right away, it is not shelf stable.
Link to lime sulfur that we use.
Pour on ivermectin. 3ML per leg and I mix it with 6-8oz of mineral oil to help distribute it.
